Nouveau Poor: nou.veau poor [noo’-voh, noo-voh’] [poor]
Noun pl: Individuals who possess aplomb and ingenuity in the face of an unexpected and severe deterioration of their financial footing.
The proliferation of Ponzi schemes provided an opportunity for the suddenly Nouveau Poor members of the country club to test their mettle.
Today’s Nouveau Poor are collectively realizing that perhaps 30-to-1 leverage wasn’t such a good idea after all.
The Lingo of the NP
NP term for tap water at a New York City restaurant.
I don’t care for bottled water, I prefer Bloomberg’s Best, please.
Nouvacation: (do not confuse with Nouvocation) new.va.ca.tion [noo-vay-key-shuhn]
How one takes a break in the new economy. May mean rescheduling Aspen trips to off-peak times in order to rent out one’s condominium. Could get as serious as taking a “staycation” and sunning on one’s roof deck rather than escaping to the Hamptons for the weekend.
We won’t be having Christmas in Aspen this year, we’re going on a nouvacation in February instead.
NP rebranding of the global economic condition; aka the recession.
Shall we thank Mr. Greenspan for ushering in the nouveaucomony?
Nouvocation: new.vo.ca.tion [noo-voh-key-shuhn]
One’s career post economic downturn. The job you take after having been let go, downsized, made redundant. May be in a career path one did not train for, on a lower rung of the corporate ladder than one had previously achieved, and will almost always come with a smaller salary and/or loss of bonus earning potential.
I used to be a Vice President, but my nouvocation is as an office administrator.
I’m going to have to find a nouvoucation now that my company went under.
Nouveau Poortion: nou.veau poor.tion [noo-voh poor-shuhn]
What one eats at a restaurant when dining with friends. The act of splitting one or more dishes in order to have a fun dining experience without breaking one’s bank.
The entrees at this restaurant are huge. Let’s share- one nouveau poortion is fine for me.
The good news is, if I eat a nouveau poortion instead of the whole dish, I’ll spend less and weigh less, too.
